TIE Book Bownload | The Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) is an important public institution operating under the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology. Its primary role is to interpret government education policies and create appropriate curriculum programs and teaching materials to ensure high-quality education across pre-primary, primary, secondary, and teacher education levels.

Originally known as the Institute of Education (IE), it was established by Act No. 13 of 1963 as part of the University College of Dar es Salaam, aiming to improve teaching and learning processes by aligning teacher training functions with the Ministry of Education.

In 1970, the University College of Dar es Salaam became the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), and IE continued as part of the university. In 1975, IE gained independence from UDSM and became a corporate body under the Ministry of Education and Culture.

In 1987, the Institute changed its name to the Institute of Curriculum Development (ICD) to reflect its involvement in curriculum design and development. However, its objectives remained consistent.

The name was changed again in 1993 to Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) to better represent its functions beyond curriculum development.

In July 2009, TIE evolved from a standard public institution to a Non-University institution regulated by the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE). This transformation allowed TIE to train curriculum specialists and confer certificates, diplomas, and postgraduate diplomas in curriculum design and development.

TIE’s main functions include:

  1. Designing and developing curricula for pre-primary, primary, secondary, and teacher education levels.
  2. Conducting in-service and pre-service teacher training to ensure efficient curriculum implementation.
  3. Ensuring education quality through teaching methods, objectives, and teaching-learning materials.
  4. Providing technical advice to the government and other stakeholders to enhance the quality of education at all levels.
