About MSF:
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent medical humanitarian organization that provides emergency assistance to people affected by conflict, epidemics, natural disasters, and exclusion from healthcare. Position Overview:
The Interpreter will support MSF's medical team by providing verbal and written interpretation from English to Kiswahili (and vice versa) during medical rounds, consultations, interviews, and meetings. The role ensures accurate, respectful, and confidential communication between medical staff and the local population.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpret during medical consultations, meetings, and interviews, both in person and via phone or telecom devices.
  • Translate MSF documents from English to Kiswahili (and vice versa).
  • Inform medical staff of cultural nuances during consultations and meetings.
  • Adapt communication to suit different contexts while maintaining courtesy and professionalism.
  • Maintain confidentiality and medical secrecy.
  • Keep records of all translated documents.
  • Participate in staff training sessions as an interpreter.
  • Ensure care of provided equipment such as dictionaries or reference books.

Requirements:

  • Education: Secondary education essential; a university degree or certification in Linguistics, Foreign Languages, or a related field is desirable.
  • Experience: Previous medical interpreting experience is preferred. Familiarity with medical terminology and procedures is advantageous.
  • Languages: Fluency in both English and Kiswahili.
  • Competencies: Strong teamwork, flexibility, commitment, service orientation, and stress management.
